The winner of Sallie Mae National Teacher Award, Thomas McMahon Superintendent was selected from among seven summer trainers to train the Toms River teaching staff on various new teaching methodologies. He later became the Vice-Principal ofa K-8 school district at Plumsted Township at the age of 27. By following a positive discipline approach, he observed and evaluated grade 4-8 teachers. He was offered the position of Middle School Principal in another district, but he decided to stay at Plumsted Township and started providing training to the grade 6-8 teachers on the middle school philosophy. He undertook the responsibility of finding new land to built a separate middle school and assumed the position of Business Administrator once the land was acquired.
Thomas McMahon Superintendent was successful in completing a nine million dollar school project within budget and on time. He also took on the responsibility of developing new curriculum for the grades 6-8 and providing training to the entire staff. He also set a record of being the youngest Assistant Commissioner of Education in Finance for the New Jersey State. As an Assistant Commissioner of Education, he helped distribute more than 6.5 billion dollars in state aid and implemented a new funding formula. Later on, he became superintendent of schools in three districts and was assigned the task of analyzing and creating new curricular programs. He incorporated technology into the curriculum and supervised the training of more than two hundred staff members.
Moreover, Thomas McMahon Superintendent initiated an Education Foundation to raise money and started a Business Partnership Program that helped raise more than $850, 000. He established connections with Universities including Monmouth University and the College of New Jersey for curriculum and training ideas. Thomas also designed and introduced several new programs such as SAT Prep, Inclusion Programs Everyday Math, Study Island, Behavioral Disabilities, Kindergarten Plus, and Instrumental Music. Aside from his contributions to the field of education, Thomas McMahon Superintendent is also known for his charitable work and has been the recipient of J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award 1998. He serves as the chairman of Watchful Shepherd Program and was a member of Board of Directors for the Association of Retarded Citizens, Ocean County.
